Trek itinerary

Departs from: Hamada du Draa,
M'hamid El Ghizlane
Duration: five nights in the desert
Difficulty level: advanced
Departure time: late morning
Day one - camel trek to Sidi Naji
After saying hello to the camels, we head into the Sahara, passing through Ras Nkhal, where you may see fragments of pottery and other remnants of lost civilisations. After lunch under a tree, we reach the holy shrine of Sidi Naji, site of our first night's camp. Watch your chef bake bread in the sand in the traditional way and enjoy a delicious dinner before retiring for your first night under the stars.
Day two - trek to Erg Zahar
As we penetrate deeper into the Sahara, the tamarisk trees start to thin out, revealing the stark beauty of the desert. We visit the site of an ancient Bedouin market, where Bedouins once traded with passing caravans, and pause for lunch before reaching the orange dunes of Erg Zahar, their unique shape carved out by the wind. Your guides set up camp and prepare dinner while you climb to the top to enjoy breathtaking views.
Day three - arrive at Erg Smar
This morning, we make our way across an expansive plateau before traversing the arid River Draa valley, the longest valley in Morocco and once the main water source for the M'hamid desert before the construction of the Ouarzazate Dam caused it to dry up.
We'll enjoy lunch with refreshing Bedouin tea before continuing to Erg Smar, with its distinctive orange and gold sand dunes. In the evening, you can take a short hike up to the well where our camels will drink, and rejuvenate your spirits by washing in the natural spring water. On the way back to camp for dinner, visit the ancient ruins of long abandoned Bedouin dwellings.
Day four - trek to Ait Ounir
During today's trek, you will notice a marked change in the scenery, as we head back south of the Draa, where barren plateau gives way to a landscape rich with abundant vegetation and towering tamarisk trees. We settle for the night amid the magnificent dunes of Erg Ait Ounir, where the camels will enjoy tucking into edible plants while you enjoy your own dinner.
Day five - onward to Bo Ghabra
After an early start, our final day's trek sees us cross the River Draa valley once again with a trek to Bo Ghabra, where you will have another chance to wash in the rejuvenating natural waters of a well, and where we set up camp for a final dinner under the stars.
Day six - return to M'hamid
After breakfast, our 4x4 will arrive to take you back to M'hamid, stopping en route at a traditional Moroccan hammam bathhouse where you can wash off the sand and grime of five days in the desert, exfoliate and relax, leaving you refreshed and reinvigorated and ready for your onward journey.
